Smugglers Cove Resort (SCR) was selected, after an extensive survey of 40 Fiji based hotels, to become a project partner in the Sustainable Tourism and Climate Change Mitigation (STCCM) Project which is the tourism industry component of the Pacific Regional Programme Coping with Climate Change in the Pacific Island Region (CCCPIR) . This major regional project is being implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), who hired TRIP Consultants to undertake the work with Fiji based hotels. An energy audit was conducted at SCR and an energy management plan was developed and implemented by the SCR management and staff, working in conjunction with TRIP Consultants. Energy savings on the monthly electricity bills have been calculated and forecast to cover the costs of implementation of the energy management plan, including the installation costs of energy efficient equipment, within one year, thereby saving nearly 40% on hotel operating costs from year two and onwards. The SCR case study is being used as an innovative demonstration model for improving energy efficiency activities in Pacific Island hotels, with reduced operating costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and reduced fuel imports, a win win situation.
